Donating money is good. I think it is the responsibility of every human to donate what they can.
But you should donate responsibly, and the first responsibility should be yourself. Yes, be selfish in the way you donate. You should donate to a cause that you might need one day. For example, do not donate money for starving children in Africa if you personally will not have a child who is going to be starving in Africa in the future. (I am going to get letters about that remark) A donation should be an investment in your possible future. A future where the choices you make today adversely affect where you might end up in life. Here are some examples.
If you smoke, donate to a cause that fights cancer.
If you gamble, donate to a cause that helps the homeless.
If you eat a lot of sugar, donate to a cause that fights diabetes.
If you drink, donate 19.00 dollars a month to me and I can buy you a drink the next time I see you.
